When Will We

Lyrics

He said do good to those that hate you, listen to how they hurt and help.  And he said we must love our enemies, judge them not that we be be judged ourselves.

And he said to resist not evil,  we’ll just poison our souls and fan the flames of hate.  He said we must love one another or die, I wonder if it’s getting too late.

And I wonder if he came again and saw us getting rich selling weapons of war.  Would we give him any kind of welcome or would we just nail him up once more.

When will we, when will we, when will we ever listen will we ever learn.  Repeat.

He tried to lead us in a new direction away from fear into trust and love. And yet it seems we’re still reptilian,  get them before they get you, when they push you shove.

What matters most we not be taken for a fool.  We not look like a sucker, chump, wimp or wuss.  We’ll take the whole world down before we let them ever make us look us look bad ever make us lose face.

And I wonder if he came again and saw us the elders oh so willing to send the young to war.  Would we look him in the eye would we give him a welcome or would we just nail him up once more.

When will we, when will we, when will we ever listen will we ever learn.  Repeat.

He said when we get all self righteous let the one without sin cast the first stone. He said know you not this place is holy.  Heaven and earth are really one.

He showed us how to live in kindness with those outcast, despised or of different blood.  With his healing touch and his welcoming hand, he showed us no one’s ever lost in the eyes of God.

And I wonder if he came again and saw us poisoning creation with our weapons of war, would we look him in the eye would we give him a welcome or would we just nail him up once more.

When will we, when will we, when will we ever listen will we ever learn.  Repeat.

He said you’ll thread a camel through the eye of a needle before a rich man passes through the pearly gates.  He said what’s the good if you gain the whole world then lose your soul in a hell you yourselves create.

He said you are forgiven as you forgive, this is the way the truth alone that will set you free.

He said what ever you do to the least of my brethren you do also unto me.

And I wonder if he came again and saw our terrible wrath raining down from the sky, would he look us in the eye, would he reach out his hand

Or would he just bow his head and cry?
